Freecycle is a wonderfully smart program that is totally free. In order to cut down on landfills being inundated with unnecessary waste, this nonprofit organization began in Tuscon in 2003 by founder Deron Beal. Today, the grassroots movement is made up of thousands of local groups in over 70 countries with over 5 million members. Because of the Freecycle program, over 400 tons of unused items have been kept out of landfills globally, each day.
Whether you are looking for a specific item or want to get rid of one, the Freecycle Network is just the ticket. If you have a perfectly good computer monitor taking up space and hate to throw it away, just list it on Freecycle Network. If you are in need of a baby bed for your grandchild, ask for one. Whether you are looking to give or looking to get, the item will get a good home and stay out of the dump.
How it Works:
- To become a member, registration is required. The process is simple and straight-forward.
- To begin, locate the Freecycle program nearest you.
- Volunteer moderators review the items prior to approval.
- Once approved, members receive a brief email listing the item.
- Members then respond via email to the request.
- All products must be completely free, appropriate for all ages and legal.
- Certain items are prohibited including liquor, pornography, tobacco, drugs and weapons.
- Trading, spam, advertising yard sales and offering political views are prohibited.
